Quick tips for telehealth counseling
Find a private space
Treat it like you would an in-person session, with confidentiality as key. You want to be able to share without worrying about who is around you.
Make sure you are connected to good wifi or have good enough service to use data. Nobody wants a healing moment to be interrupted by lagging or buffering.
Bring your focus
Maybe you’ve browsed online during work meetings, but this is your time to work on yourself and experience growth. Give it your all!
Your counselor will give you 100% of their focus. Return the favor to increase what you get out of counseling.
The pros and cons of telehealth counseling
Telehealth counseling, also known as online counseling or virtual therapy, offers several advantages and drawbacks compared to traditional in-person counseling.
Pros of Telehealth Counseling:
1. Accessibility: One of the primary advantages of telehealth counseling is increased accessibility. Clients can engage in therapy from the comfort of their own homes, eliminating barriers related to transportation, geography, or physical mobility. This is especially beneficial for individuals in rural areas or those with limited access to mental health services. As long as you are in Ohio at the time of the session, we can meet with you!
2. Convenience: Telehealth provides greater flexibility in scheduling sessions, making it easier for individuals with busy lifestyles to fit therapy into their routines. Clients can attend sessions without the need for travel time, reducing the overall time commitment associated with in-person counseling. Do a session on your lunch break, in between classes, or while the kids are at an activity.
3. Comfort and Privacy: Clients often feel more at ease in their familiar environments, which can enhance their comfort level during sessions. Telehealth allows for increased privacy, as individuals can choose a secure and confidential space for their therapy sessions, promoting openness and honesty. Grab a mug of your favorite drink and hop on your call.
4. Cost-Effective: Save on gas and get a little more longevity out of your car by putting fewer miles on it.
Cons of Telehealth Counseling:
1. Limited Non-Verbal Cues: One of the challenges of telehealth counseling is the potential loss of certain non-verbal cues that therapists rely on during in-person sessions. Video calls may not capture subtle body language, which can impact the therapeutic process.
2. Technical Issues: Technical difficulties such as poor internet connection, audio or video glitches, or device malfunctions can interrupt sessions and hinder the quality of communication. This can be frustrating for both the client and the therapist.
3. Confidentiality Concerns: Clients need to find a private and secure space for sessions to protect sensitive information. Does sound carry in your house or apartment? Will anyone be walking in or out of the space you are using? (A coffee shop is not a great place for a counseling session)
4. Lack of Physical Presence: Some clients may prefer or benefit from the physical presence of a therapist in the room. The absence of this physical connection in telehealth counseling may impact the therapeutic alliance for some individuals. There’s nothing like another human being right there with you while you are processing things.
The choice between telehealth and in-person counseling depends on individual preferences, circumstances, and the nature of the therapeutic relationship. Both modalities have their advantages and drawbacks, and the effectiveness ultimately comes down to embracing the journey, willingness to change, and putting the work in outside of session.
